It’s one of our favorite weeks of the year – the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week! The world’s most accomplished and celebrated designers flocked to this year’s new venue, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, to show off their innovative 2014 Fall/Winter collections. We were hooked from February 6th – 13th anxiously awaiting what designers like Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Joseph Altuzarra (the modern guards of relaxed glam) along with Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrara, and Diane von Furstenberg (the classic fashion icons) would have in store for us this year. As usual, we kept a particular eye out for furs, shearlings, leather and accessories!
Fall 2014 is already proving to be an exciting year for fashion forward outerwear – capes, vests, embellished coats, feminine jackets and fur trimmed everything. We enjoyed the parade of fashion bloggers, magazine editors (“Hello!” Vogue’s Anna Wintour decked out in fab furs as she was prominently perched front and center at the must attend shows) and the oh so stylish celebs on the scene who created as much buzz as the lanky models seen prancing down the runway in Fall’s best of show selections. Here are a few highlights from this year’s designer collections that will leave you almost ready to skip spring and summer!
Shapely Silhouettes: This year, when it comes to tailoring, bigger is better (which most women will appreciate!) Coats and sweaters will be over-the-top by way of size, shape and dramatic design details. Most collections included an abundance of boxy tops, oversized statement sweaters, and pump-up the volume fur trims on collars and cuffs. A favorite look was the bathrobe-style belted coat which combined a comfortable fit with chic styling for a casual yet luxe look. Pictured to the left, this mod, navy blue Carolina Herrera coat offers a fresh take on her lady-like classic styling.
Color me Royal: Subtle to sensational, for Fall it’s all about hue! The dyed fur trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and we’re so very happy. From pretty pastels to brilliant jewel tones, designers created a rainbow of colorful coats to accentuate you. Particularly popular for feminine dresses and accent fur pieces are shades of dusty rose, pink blush, and ivory creams. For those that prefer stop and stare attention, bold choices abound in rich jewel tones – garnet, emerald, and amethyst, as well as fuchsia, citron, deep navy and turquoise. We love this Dennis Basso sable coat in a gorgeous ruby red. And, as in 2013, grey matters. Found in every shade imaginable from dove to gunmetal, grey again made its way into many of the designers’ color palates for Fall 2014.
In Graphic Detail: Designers filled the runways with fun and playful patterns for fall. On blouses, skirts, dresses and furs, heritage patterns such as plaid, tartan, gingham and houndstooth are back in action. We’ll also see plenty of girly florals (love this Anna Sui piece shown here paired with an emerald feathered fox fur jacket) or the contrasting two-tone wild animal prints with big stripes and large spots making a grand showing. For fur, color blocking and abstract patterns played a key role. When it comes to texture, 2014 brings chunky knits, rich velvet, and sheared or grooved furs into the limelight. And for the romantic at heart, feminine looks such as lace, laser cut-outs and sheer paneling definitely wowed the fashion crowd.
Metal Mania: Metallics have been in demand on and off the runway for several years now, but in 2014 we can expect heavy metal to be popular. Think shiny silver, rustic copper, an abundance of blinged out bead work, and plethora of go for gold accessories. A lot of the shine you’ll see this year will come from infused fabrics, elegant embellishments and fancy adornments. Fur was also a favorite accent material on the runway this year. Boots, hats, cowls and clutches all donned little fur details. Badgley Mischka accessorized this gold evening gown with a touch of fur – pure perfection!
Cowgirl Up: We are constantly looking for the latest leather looks, and this year, all things OUT west … are IN style! Cowgirl hats (oversized, tall and rustic), fringe, ponchos, tribal patterns and leather detailing were a staple on the runway. Michael Kors paired his ombre sweater (fringe included) with a classic hobo-inspired bag for an effortless look.
