This month marks the end of an EMPIRE, the Lyon Family biz – Empire Entertainment. Who knew it would be the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 that would bring Luscious Lyon (Terrance Howard) and Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) to this final good-bye?!?
Filmed in Chicago, the FOX TV-Show has weathered 6 seasons (Note: On April 21st, viewers will only see #18 and part of 19 out of 20 episodes that were scheduled to be filmed prior to the IL Gov. J.B. Pritzker Stay-at-Home mandate issued on March 21, 2020) of the Lyon Family fighting to head-up their powerhouse company in the hip hop industry. Though the plotline has ebbed, flowed and taken some pretty bizarre twists (plus the real-life role-ending unreal moments in the news courtesy of actor, Jussie Smollett), viewers have stayed tuned-in to savor some of the small screen’s greatest fashion moments! And, from beginning to end, York Furrier, Inc. ruled the fashion spotlight with an eclectic array of furs, fine outerwear, and accessories for the Lyon Family and the show’s numerous guest stars.
FUR the Grand Exit & Entrance
Let’s begin with the Lyon Family matriarch and Queen Bee, Loretha “Cookie” Lyon (played by award-winning actress, Taraji P. Henson). She stole the show from the first scene of season one when she strutted out of prison wearing a white mink coat over a too tight thigh-high leopard print dress. Fans immediately fell in love with her rough-around-the-edges (yet loveable for her faults) personae and always over-the-top style.
Cookie certainly flaunted the fluff stuff from York Furrier in season 1, episode 6, “Out, Damned Spot.” Who can FURget Cookie’s jaw-dropping, coat opening, and rear slapping (K.M.A. moment) as she dons sexy lingerie hiding beneath an Empress Purple colored Chinchilla Walking Coat. Cookie looked HAUTE and the York Furrier garment made THE top TV fashion moment for the year.
Another for the highlight reel and perfect for social media videos, was the WOWZA slow-motion power walk taken in season 3, episode 16, titled, “Absent Child.” Dressed to thrill, Cookie dons a statement-making feminine yet fierce-looking Lilac Fox Jacket (yes, from York Furrier!) over an apropos Gucci Bengal Tiger Print Dress. Clad in her power fur, Cookie is ready to confidently confront the DuBois Family about her missing grandbaby, Bella.
EMPIRE Men Play a Stylish Role Too
Luscious Lyon a.k.a. Dwight Walker relishes his roles as the Lyon Family patriarch and the macho mogul who founded Empire Entertainment and now serves as its CEO. His wardrobe is seriously statement-making. Whether he’s wearing a power suit, iconic accessories – shades, scarves, and some supersized gold jewelry, or donning outerwear from the York Furrier Fine Outerwear Collection for Men, there’s no doubt that the clothes play a pivotal role. A fave Luscious fashion moment involves a winter scene wearing a York Fur midnight colored shearling lamb car coat and leather gloves while son, Andre (actor Trai Byers) wears a York Furrier cashmere blend overcoat. Other sharp-dressed moments have included camel cashmere coats, street-cred style leather jackets, and sheared beaver trooper hats made by the talented York Design Team.
Cliffhanger in Coyote
EMPIRE’s season 4 finale ends with a bang as a gun goes off and someone is shot. With the season 5 opener, the viewer learns that Hakeem Lyon (actor and rapper, Bryshere Y. Gray) – clad in a York Furrier hooded coyote zip-up parka with fox trim – was shot in the midsection piercing his lung. The injury makes it difficult for Hakeem to perform and causes him to second guess his future career. Speaking of performances, to film the shooting scene, York Furrier also custom made two additional pieces created from faux material to look like Hakeem’s very real fox trimmed coyote hooded parka.
Guest Appearances & Their Scene Stealing Furs
In a recurring role, Courtney Love portrayed character, Elle Dallas, a previously top-selling Empire R&B recording artist, trying to make her come-back under Cookie’s tutelage. In one episode alone, Courtney’s character wore three absolutely gorgeous pieces from York Furrier – a silver fox trimmed sheared beaver flounce coat (for Elle’s all-eyes-on-me entrance), a red fox trimmed sheared beaver jacket with jewel detail and an intarsia floral design (playing a prominent role in the recording studio), and a York Signature Style custom-designed fox trimmed floral printed silk wrap (pulled ever-so-tightly around Elle’s shoulders as Cookie lectured her about foregoing her drug-addled lifestyle).
Another Empire character known for her fur fashion was the everyone- loves- to- hate- her, Camilla (played by Naomi Campbell). Camilla rocked several scenes in a gorgeous fox demi-sleeve bolero from York Furrier.
As we tune-in on April 21st to bid farewell to the cast of characters on EMPIRE, it may be the end, yet the show’s edgy storyline along with all the gorgeous fur and outerwear fashions will be fondly remembered forever by adoring EMPIRE (and York Furrier, Inc.) fans.
