Malan Breton Launches his First Fur Collection
Malan Breton has been designing clothes since he was 11 years old. And although he didn’t follow a traditional path, over the past several years the fashion world has embraced his signature look – elegant detailing and glamorous fabrics, always with the female figure in mind. This year, Breton applied that design aesthetic to fur. Breton was born in Taiwan in 1973 and never attended design school. He moved to New York for modeling in 1996 and found himself also pursuing an array of other ventures – personal styling, theater, photography, dance, voice work and broadcasting. Ultimately, his love for fashion won out. His design career really took off in 2005. Three years later, he added an accessories collection, followed by his men’s line in 2010. A-list celebrities, including Kylie Minogue, Michael Buble, Celine Dion and Ricki Lake – just to name a few – have all rocked Breton’s designs.
Malan Breton Furs
Last year, Breton signed an outerwear deal and launched a full line of fur garments, Malan Breton Furs, at New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013. Much like his 2013 Spring/Summer collection – which was filled with whimsical pastels and flattering silhouettes – Breton’s fur pieces include feminine styles crafted form superb materials. Peruse and admire a sampling from his first fur collection below.
Breton used silver mink for this contemporary natural and sheared mink walking coat. Geometric shearing gives the coat added dimension and richness. Since focus is on the detailed design, Breton keeps the silhouette, particularly the collar, clean and simple.
This ankle-length mink coat (left) reflects Breton at his finest. He perfectly balances length and volume by keeping the shoulders and arms tailored, and the unique hue is just beautiful. The chinchilla shawl collar is dramatic and playful but not overwhelming. If you’re looking for evening glam, this is a fabulous option. Breton’s burgundy dyed mink walking coat (right) pairs sleek styling with dramatic coyote trim. Again, this is a great pick if you’re looking for a versatile mink fur coat.
This black mink jacket is perhaps the most simple and adaptable fur garment in Breton’s collection. It falls just below the hips, making it ideal for the woman who wears her fur day-to-day, maybe with jeans and riding boots. However, throw it over an evening gown, as shown here, and it becomes stunningly elegant. Breton’s debut fur collection also includes a men’s black hooded coat, a dramatic black and white mink coat, an elegant black mink wrap and more. On the runway, he paired a fur wrap with a sleeveless a-line gown. Wraps are a great alternative to a traditional fur coat if you need a touch of glam for evening look. It will be exciting to see how Breton’s eye for design evolves over the years, particularly when it comes to fur – his ultra-glam new found passion!
