Just like car enthusiasts love watching Vin Diesel pull off impossible stunts in rare fast cars during the Fast and the Furious films, we in the fashion industry certainly enjoy viewing our passion on screen too. For fur fashionistas, it’s thrilling to see the prominent placement of fur in our fave movies and TV shows. Whether living large on the movie screen or becoming larger than life on the small screen, fur fashion creates a mood for each character’s starring role. Here are some of the best fur moments from the past few years.
Fur lovers are still talking about The Devil Wears Prada featuring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly depicting a not-so- fictionalized version of Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Fabulous furs – mink, sable, fox, chinchilla, etc. – figured prominently in the story line as Streep traversed from the magazine’s office to glam galas and jet-setting to the Paris runway shows.
Empire, the hit Fox drama filmed in Chicago, follows the Lyon Family as they compete to see who will take over running the family biz – Empire Entertainment – a powerhouse for the hip hop industry. The show stars Terrence Howard as Luscious Lyon and Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon, a rough-around-the-edges (yet lovable for her faults) ex-wife, mother, former jailbird, and still a music mogul. Power packed guest starring roles have included: Cuba Gooding, Jr., Gladys Knight, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Rita Orr, Snoop Dog, and Courtney Love as Elle Davis (check-out her York Signature Style fur wearing grand entrance and the Zuki designed fur from York Furrier that was a highlight of the recording studio scene). Be sure to LIKE and SHARE our Facebook page with the four York Furrier looks featured in just one episode of Empire in February! And, be sure to tune in for Season 2 (spoiler alert) to see what York Furrier creation Cookie will be wearing on the red carpet.
One of this past year’s most talked about films, The Grand Budapest Hotel, received 9 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The film won for best costume design (congrats Milena Canonero!) and it’s easy to see why. In these comical scenes, fur makes a grand appearance. Canonero put actress Tilda Swinton in a rich red coat with gold detailing and sleek ranch mink fur trim. The matching fur trimmed hat tops off the look! Meanwhile Ed Norton as Inspector Henckels is quite dapper wearing a Persian lamb coat while on duty.
Nominated for ten Academy Awards (though it surprisingly didn’t take home any golden men!), American Hustle, staring Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, hit the silver screen in 2013. This spring, the movie’s fabulous fur moments were recreated at the Fall 2015 runway shows. Take a look as the ladies rock over-the-top fur coats, fur trimmed collars, along with an oh-so-covetable and au currant again 70’s glam style!
Three other films that supremely featured furs include: the fox fur collar worn by Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) in the Great Gatsby, the mink coat worn by Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Margot, in the Royal Tenenbaums, and the plush fox tuxedo trimmed coat worn by Keira Knightley in her portrayal of Anna Karenina.
The HBO series Game of Thrones has embraced the use of fur in its costuming for a less traditional, but equally dramatic, effect. Lead actress Lena Headey plays Cersei Lannister, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Hence, her wardrobe is exquisite and her taste luxurious! While most of the furs featured in the show are bit rustic for everyday wear, there are certainly ways to embrace the looks in 2015. Like this shearling hooded walking coat trimmed with Finnish raccoon.
We also feel compelled to throw a flashback in the mix because who could forget the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump’s ensemble during the girls trip to Beaver Creek Colorado a few seasons back? While it might not be the most functional look on the mountain, she rocked it and we love her for it! Walk a day in Lisa’s shoes (obviously 6 inch heels) with this natural pearl mink jacket; or don this Zandra Rhodes lynx vest with fox trim and matching headband to hit the slopes in star style.
